What is Turtl?

Turtl is cloud-based software based on the science of reading. Our software provides users with the opportunity to easily build beautiful and fully interactive content pieces. Turtl also allows you to clearly see which parts of your content are performing the best with its built-in analytics feature. With this data, you can then go on to produce content that you know your readers will enjoy.

What is a Turtl Doc?

A Turtl Doc is the name that we give to a piece of finished content.  

Why the name Turtl?

The leatherback turtle has been known to dive as far as a kilometre down towards the seabed, slowing their heart rate in the process.

At these depths, the turtles are ill-equipped to hunt effectively, so why do they go there?  According to researchers, this behaviour is rooted in reconnaissance. These depths are where jellyfish go to hide from the heat of the day. Leatherback turtles dive down to learn where in the wide expanse of the sea they can expect their next meal to emerge.

This behaviour mirrors certain principles underpinning how we read. We have an easy time at the surface of magazines or books, where we skim and surf through titles and headings to locate something relevant to us. To learn more about the item of interest, we dive in, immersing ourselves in the story.

Like the leatherback, Turtl steers readers through Surf levels and Immerse levels, with the latter demanding more of the reader but delivering greater insight and value in return.

Who is Turtl built for?

Turtl was built predominantly for marketing and communications teams, but designed for any and all content creators. It enables them to create, publish and measure content experiences that readers actually want to interact with – without the need for dedicated design, performance marketing or analytics resources.

Why use Turtl instead of PDFs?

The PDF is over 20 years old, not only is it hard to read on mobile, it also doesn’t offer any analytics! Yet, we all know how critical mobile, insight and data is right? Turtl offers its readers a far richer experience and provides its users with extremely useful insights such as reads, sign-ups and average read times, amongst other things. PDF files offer no reader interaction and encourage endless scrolling, which as we know results in less engagement. So much content goes against the core principles of how we absorb and remember information, to the detriment of how readers engage with it. Turtl’s design is based on the science reading and therefore solves this problem.

Do I need to have any training to be able to use Turtl?

All new users are provided with an initial one-hour training session. Turtl is a self-serve platform and is extremely user-friendly. You don’t need to be a designer to create visually stunning materials in Turtl. We also offer our users onboarding and general support at every step of the journey.

Who can I contact if I have a question?

Product features

What’s the difference between Surf and Immerse pages?

Turtl Docs are made up of chapters, think of Surf pages as the chapter cover and the Immerse pages as where you’ll find all the content. Surf pages should only feature a cover image, plus a headline and, if required, a subheading.

Is Turtl mobile friendly?

Turtl Docs are fully responsive and optimised for mobile as well as desktop. A mobile view is available in the story editor to see how your creations transpose before you publish.

Where can Turtl Docs be published?

Docs can be published in a number of places, for example, across social channels, in your email newsletters or on your website. All Docs have their own unique URL which you are free to publish where you like. Also, to save you time and speed up the publishing process, social cards and GIFs are auto-generated for each Doc, for you to use when publishing your work.

Can I host a Turtl Doc on my website?

Yes, absolutely. This just requires a CNAME set-up from our end.  

How does Turtl work with SEO?

Turtl Docs are SEO-friendly and automatically indexed by all major search engines. You can tailor the settings of your Turtl Doc to optimize your content for SEO, with handy tools to help boost your content’s performance including custom URLs along with meta and social descriptions. Can I use Turtl with my CRM system?

We integrate with most major CRM providers (Pardot, Hubspot, Salesforce, Marketo etc) and are adding new ones all the time.

Can I change the language of my Turtl Doc?

Absolutely! Turtl is available in numerous languages including: Arabic, Chinese (simplified & traditional), French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, and many others.

You can change the language of your Doc within the settings menu in Turtl. Please note: changing the language will only change your Doc’s default text, including the ‘Read on’ and ‘Contents’ buttons. This will not translate the content of your Doc. If the language you would like to use is not available our support team will work with you to add the new translation for you.

How do I ensure brand consistency?

We design and code your brand guidelines into a bespoke theme for your company account, ensuring even the most experimental content creations stay on brand.

Does Turtl integrate with 3rd party apps?

Turtl documents can be connected with a range of applications in your tech stack. You can make your documents interactive with third party charting tools, videos, chatbots and social sharing for example. Turtl also integrates with leading CRM and marketing automation systems, including Hubspot, Salesforce, Marketo and Eloqua, so you can track how leads and contacts interact with your documents. Data and analytics

What data can I collect from a Turtl Doc?

Turtl allows you to see precisely which chapters and topics in your publications readers care about. You can view data such as reads, sign-ups and average read times. You can also identify individual readers and see which Docs and which specific chapters of those Docs they engage with the most.

How up-to-date is the data?

Turtl analytics are all collected and processed by our own engine. Everything is processed in (near) real-time, with a maximum 5 minute lag between an event occurring and data showing up in our dashboards. All data can be seen and filtered within the app, summaries can be downloaded in Excel format and raw data can be downloaded as CSV if you want to do your own processing/number crunching.

Do you offer any analytics integrations?

We support the ability to send analytics events to a customer’s own backend in real-time. We expose a number of different events within Docs for this purpose with a complete guide available here. This is done as a bespoke piece of work as requirements can differ wildly between customers. Customers typically use this to send important metrics to their main analytics store and we are able to fire custom events after certain metrics have been reached e.g. if user has read at least 5 pages for a duration of at least 3 minutes, we could fire an “Engaged read” event to your backend.


Is Turtl GDPR compliant?

Who can see the Docs I create?

As a lead user you’re able to maintain full control over who can do what within your Turtl instance. Once a Doc is published it automatically becomes public, but you have the option to change this (see below). You can also gate your content with lead generation forms so that readers are required to submit their contact details to access your Doc.

Can I make a Turtl Doc private?

Yes, there are different access policies available for all Docs. You can choose between public, private, internal or email and password.

What personal data is held by Turtl?

Turtl processes personal data on your behalf as a processor when performing our obligations under our license agreement, this includes any personal data that you elect to include in your Turtl Docs and/or any non-anonymised analytics data generated for the purpose of measuring the performance of your Turtl Docs. Turtl may also process personal data as a controller (for example when administering user login details) which use shall be in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

Is my data secure?

All data is held in databases hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Dublin, Ireland (eu-west-1). All data at rest is encrypted with AES256 and keys are managed through Amazon KMS. Encrypted backups are taken regularly and stored securely according to our retention schedule. Learn more about our security policies.

Pricing & Plans

How can I get started?

The first step is to book a demo of the Turtl platform and choose a package that best fits your requirements. We’ll then set up templates in Turtl with your brand logo and colors, so you can start creating your first Turtl Doc. Drag and drop images, text, video and polls then publish your document when you’re ready.

What are my payment method options?

You can use a credit card to pay for Turtl or you can choose to pay by invoice. Payments are billed annually in British pound sterling or US dollars.

Are there any additional setup fees?

The prices shown for Starter, Pro and Premium licenses are inclusive of set up fees. All licenses include an automated brand theme, whereby Turtl is configured with your company logo, up to 10 brand colors and Google fonts.

Can I upgrade or downgrade our Turtl plan at any time?

Turtl licenses are annual subscriptions, so there’s a minimum commitment of a year. If you need additional users, documents or features you can update your plan at any time. To discuss changes to your subscription please contact your account manager.
