What is Turtl?

Turtl is cloud-based software which creates, personalizes, manages, and tracks Turtl Docs. Our software provides users with the opportunity to easily build on-brand, media-rich, and interactive content pieces. Turtl also allows users to clearly see which parts of their Turtl Doc are performing the best with its built-in analytics feature. With this data, users can then go on to produce content that they know readers will engage with.

What is a Turtl Doc?

A Turtl Doc is the format name for brain-friendly digital documents created in Turtl.

Why use Turtl instead of PDFs?

The PDF is over 20 years old. PDFs offer  no reader interaction, aren’t  optimized for different devices, and encourage  endless scrolling. Which, as we know, results in less engagement. Yet, we all know how critical mobile, insight, and data are, right? Content in the PDF format goes against the core principles of how we absorb and remember information. And this is to the detriment of how readers engage with these materials.

An an alternative to the PDF, Turtl’s design is based on the science of reading, and therefore solves this problem. Turtl offers its readers a far richer experience, and provides its users with actionable insights, such as reads, sign-ups, and average read times, amongst other invaluable metrics.

Why the name Turtl?

The leatherback turtle has been known to dive as far as a kilometer down towards the seabed, slowing their heart rate in the process. At these depths, the turtles are ill-equipped to hunt effectively. So why do they go there?

According to researchers, this behavior is rooted in reconnaissance. These depths are where jellyfish go to hide from the heat of the day. Leatherback turtles dive down to learn where in the wide expanse of the sea they can expect their next meal to emerge.

This behavior mirrors certain principles underpinning how we read. We have an easy time at the surface of magazines or books, where we skim and surf through titles and headings to locate something relevant to us. To learn more about the topic of interest, we dive in, immersing ourselves in the story.

Like the leatherback, Turtl Docs steer readers through Surf “title page” levels and Immerse “further information” levels, with the latter demanding more of the reader – but delivering greater insight and value in return.

Who is Turtl built for?

Turtl was originally built for marketing and communications teams, but the software is optimal for any and all content creators. It enables users to create, publish, and measure digital documents that readers are more likely to engage with – without the need for dedicated design, coding, performance marketing, or analysis specialists.

Turtl Docs are made up of chapters. Think of Surf pages as the chapter cover, or title pages, which should only feature a cover image, plus a headline, and, if required, a short subheading. The Immerse pages are where readers can really dive in to discover all the content, greater insights, and value.

Is Turtl mobile-friendly?

Turtl Docs are fully responsive and optimized for mobile and tablet, as well as desktop. A mobile view is available in the editor to see how your creations transpose before you publish.

Turtl Docs can be published in a number of places, such as across social channels, in email campaigns, or on your website. All Docs have their own unique URL which you are free to publish where you like. In addition, to speed up the publishing process, social cards and GIFs are auto-generated for you to use when publishing each Turtl Doc.

Can I host a Turtl Doc on my website?

How does Turtl work with SEO?

Turtl Docs can be crawled and indexed by search engines and optimized for search (H1s, keyword research etc). Data and analytics

What data can I collect from a Turtl Doc?

Turtl gathers and collates in-depth analytics across all your Turtl Docs. Data can be analyzed at a reader, document, or aggregate (company) level. Each view provides a series of valuable metrics, such as source, reads, sign-ups, CTR, bounce rate, shares, interactions, and average read times (for Surf and Immerse pages). Using Turtl’s granular reader insights allows you to better monitor content performance, including which chapters and topics in your publications readers care about, so you can do more of what works.

How up-to-date is the data?

Turtl analytics are all collected and processed by our own engine. Between an event occurring and data showing up in our dashboards, there is a lag of up to 10 minutes after the read occurs. All data can be seen and filtered within the app, summaries can be downloaded in Excel format, and raw data can be downloaded as CSV if you want to do your own processing/number crunching.

Do you offer any analytics integrations?

We support the ability to send analytics events to a customer’s own backend in real-time. We expose a number of different events within Turtl Docs for this purpose with a complete guide available here. This is done as a bespoke piece of work as requirements can differ wildly between customers. Customers typically use this to send important metrics to their main analytics store. We are able to fire custom events after certain metrics have been reached e.g. if a reader has read at least 5 pages for a duration of at least 3 minutes, we could fire an “Engaged read” event to your backend.
